PUTTING on a memorable show on the last day of the season, Tynedale finished a place higher to clinch an impressive fourth place.

Still boasting one of the youngest first teams around, they have again excelled and batted superbly to earn the 145 run success at the already relegated Annfield Plain.

Batting first on a green wicket, Tynedale reached 62-3 within 15 overs with captain Tom Cant and James Rainford coming in. Christopher Graham had taken the first three wickets of Sam Mannion, the attacking Jamie Crichton and professional Patrick Matautaava.

Rainford rallied to the cause and was showing a rhythmic flare with his strokes, with Tyne in attacking mood even when Rainford was bowled by Michael Hawdon with the score on 86.

After a shaky start against Shane Oliver, Noah Hiles recaptured his mid-season form as he and Cant got on top of the bowling and the pair put on 77 with the skipper hitting the ball to all parts of the ground. Hiles handled everything that was thrown at him, even the slower balls from Saqib Khan, but was eventually bowled by Hawdon with the score on 163-5.

Tynedale were indebted to their captain when he provided the bulk of the next 67 runs, eventually caught out by Oliver off Lewis Donnelly as the last wicket to fall.

Cant had earlier defended a hat-trick ball from Donnelly after he accounted for Josh Renton and Ross Sinclair in quick succession.

Will Dagg was run out by Donnelly, Callum Barnes manufactured 15 runs before being caught by David Newstead off Stuart Newton, and Curtis Lucas finished not out as Cant finally departed in the penultimate over.

Dagg and Renton lacked penetration as they opened the bowling to defend a target of 231, and it allowed Newton and Sam Stephenson to put on an opening stand of 22.

But things started to turn sour when Renton had Newton caught behind by Rainford. Two further wickets fell with the score in the 20s, Renton taking another wicket and Dagg getting in on the act.

The floodgates opened at this point, Plain’s next seven wickets falling for just 58 runs with the extras tally 16 being the highest score of the innings.

Renton had found his stride and claimed another two wickets, while Lucas and Barnes shared four. It was over to Mannion to finish things off as he claimed his first wicket in his debut season at the club, taking the last wicket of Graham to earn the success.

After a great season, chairman Gary Cant and the first team squad paid particular thanks to the great work of scorer Chris Wicklow and to sponsors MKM Building Supplies.
