Old Boys are caned

Riding Mill travelled to the only place in the North East without sun to play King’s School Old Boys at Tynemouth.

The Old Boys elected to bat first, with Coyne and Gavin Black opening the batting.

Nick Reid and Dean Owens bowled excellently to put great pressure on both batsmen, with the first wicket coming in the ninth over when Reid bowled Black for only five.

Three wickets fell in the next four overs with Reid dismissing both Moir and Devlin with brilliant deliveries and Owens running Bridge out with a direct hit.

Captain Coyne decided to drop anchor and ensure that he saw the innings through, batting sensibly to reach his half century.

However, Alex Hovells bowled superbly to take three wickets for 22 runs off eight overs, and despite good contributions from Elliott and Ian Black, the Old Boys were finally dismissed for 137.

Nick Reid was the pick of the bowlers with 3-19 off eight overs to give the Millers a great chance of victory.

Cairns and Scott opened and batted sensibly against the guile of Black.

However runs came freely from the other end and the 50 was brought up after only 10 overs.

Cairns finally fell for 28, hitting a full toss straight down deep square leg’s throat.

However, Scott continued to reach his half century but finally lost his stumps to a rare rash stroke, falling for 63.

KSOB struggled to control the ball as the sea fret continued to roll in, and before long, the pavilion could no longer be seen from the square.

Wallis and Nick Reid batted responsibly to guide the Millers home with some seven overs remaining, to complete an excellent eight wicket victory over a strong side to continue the Millers’ excellent run of form.

Their season continues to go from strength to strength and this victory followed three consecutive 100 run victories against Ovingham, Mallards and Genetics.

KSOB 137 all out (Coyne 53, Elliott 24. N. Reid 3-19, Hovells 3-22). RIDING MILL 139 for 2 (Scott 63, Cairns 28)
