Why the sun always shines on Allendale
Last updated 13:31, Thursday, 07 August 2008
With games called off across the Dickinson Dees West Tyne League, thanks should be given that the sun always shines in Allendale. when Newton turned up to Riding Haugh for the first division match.Dickinson Dees West Tyne League
Skipper Gareth Mews set the tone for the day by realising the rare achievement of winning the toss and inserting his guests on a damp track.
Allendale were boosted by the return of the Maccy D’s express Amit Sunda and in only his second game of the season, he sent down nine wicketless overs for a miserly 14 runs.
At the other end Ant White accounted for the first two Newton wickets; the dangerous Bowery brilliantly caught by John Richardson and Balkwell well held behind the wicket by Mews.
All the Newton batsmen were struggling with the pace of the wicket and the accuracy of the Dale’s opening pair but Reynolds was applying himself well when more experienced colleagues were not.
The introduction of guru Dave Swann into the attack tore the heart out of Newton.
He bowled 11.4 overs taking seven wickets for 27 runs, using flight and many decades of experience.
Every batsmen struggled, and with the ball following catching machine Jamie White around the field, wickets fell like they were going out of fashion.
Bennett top scored with 23 but he was lacking in any real support.
Newton’s total of 86 all out was never going to be enough on a drying wicket against an Allendale side who were warming up for the most important game of the season the following day in the John Rutherford cup match.
Robson and Newton bowled with nagging accuracy but Chris Rutherford, fresh from yet another run in with the law, continued his recent good form and was leaving the good ball with disdain.
Robson took the early wicket of Chris Welch but John Richardson rebuilt and then Dom Barnes continued.
Barnes retired after sustaining a nasty blow to the end of his thumb and Sunda quickly followed.
Rutherford carried his bat for a belligerent 30 and Mews knocked off the winning runs with a Richardsonesque 10 not out.
The club would like to thank match sponsors Elliott Environmental Surveyors, practical environmental solutions in a changing world.

HEXHAM LEAZES vBENWELL HILLHexham Leazes won by 8 wickets
On yet another grey and showery day, champions Hexham Leazes welcomed Benwell Hill to the Leazes ground, knowing victory was vital to keep any hopes of retaining the title alive.
The toss was always going to be crucial, so Leazes feared the worst, but skipper Andrew Webster shocked everyone by winning, and Leazes bowlers had first crack at the green damp pitch.
Two sessions of one over were ended by showers but as the rain finally relented after an early tea, Webster brought the spin of Billy Kingman into the attack early to partner Scott Ferguson.
This proved inspired as Leazes ripped through the Hill line up with Ferguson’s line, length and movement particularly impressive.
Sharp fielding led to two run outs and when the returning Dan Toward took the final wicket Benwell Hill had been bundled out for 44.
Ferguson finished with 4-14 from his 12 overs with Kingman returning 3-23 in support,
Turnbull provided the main resistance for the Hill.
As the sun eventually made an appearance Leazes lost both openers early in reply but John Hubbuck and Raji Kingman held their nerve to guide Leazes home to a vital 12 points.
BENWELL HILL: (J. Turnbull 17; S. Ferguson 4-14, B. Kingman 3-23) total 44 all out.HEXHAM LEAZES: (R. Kingman 18, J. Hubbuck 15) total 45-2.

NEWBROUGH vALLENDALE IINewbrough won by 4 wickets
Allendale lost early wickets cheaply, but a half-century from Barrie Waller steadied the ship.
Good support from Crellin (23) and Sparke (19) saw the Sale reach a respectable 140-9.
The bowling honours were shared by Telfer and Nevin, with three wickets apiece.
After losing Nevin cheaply, Newbrough settled down, and a patient unbeaten 41 from Johnson was the backbone of a winning total.
He shared partnerships with Waugh (36) and Beaumont (23) on the way to a four-wicket win.
Crellin was the pick of the Allendale bowlers with 3-28 in his nine overs.
The match was sponsored by the Friends of the Settle- Carlisle Line.

STOCKSFIELD III vWARKStocksfield won by 5 runs
With the early August showers deciding to miss the Stocksfield ground after 12.30pm, and the covers protecting the pitch overnight, the game started on time, with Stocksfield electing to bat.
Stocksfield’s captain Chris Catnach continued his efforts to save ink in the scorer’s pen, but the younger elements in the team kept their heads and built a score.
Chris Patterson (28), Richard Mannion (21) and Nick Gordon (38) all made good contributions, despite the valiant efforts of Martin Cameron, who bowled a tight line and collected a couple of deserved wickets.
Simon Jeffrey had no luck with the ball, although that could apply to all the Wark attack, in particular Michael Herdman.
Stocksfield finished on 127-7 and both teams enjoyed their tea (including M. and C’s gooseberry pie) before resuming battle.
Nick Reed’s pace troubled the early batsmen but it was Dave Castelow who collected the final wicket when Gordon Jeffrey holed out at mid on to a well earned catch by Andrew “Newt” Newton.
Reid collected a couple of wickets before John Pigg (29) and Dave Scott (28) moved the score on.
At 110-6, the game could have gone either way, but a couple of wickets for Chris Patterson gave Stocksfield victory, leaving Wark rueing the fact they could only field nine men (supported by some good fielding from the SCC club).
This was a competitive game, played in good spirit, and thanks are due to umpire Michael Haywood.
