Patel spins Prudhoe back to the top
Last updated 13:25, Thursday, 22 May 2008
PRUDHOE returned to the top of the Dickinson Dees West Tyne League first division with a seven wicket win over Humshaugh. League table
After a dry couple of weeks, Humshaugh’s pitches had dried up well and become hard.
However, a couple of hours rain on the morning of the fixture ensured the pitch would be lively.
Prudhoe’s captain called correctly and made the correct decision to ask the home side to bat first.
From the first ball of Patel’s spell, Humshaugh’s openers knew it was going to be a hard day.
Patel bowled quickly and managed to extract good bounce but most importantly lots of movement off the pitch.
He quickly accounted for the wickets of opener Murray and number three Williamson for low scores.
At the other end Bell was bowling economically and would end up bowling eight overs conceding only 10 runs.
Humshaugh’s other opener McKenna stuck to his task well but no-one was able to offer him the support that he needed.
Humshaugh’s middle order failed to ignite, all falling to the spin of Stokoe and Peries.
McKenna eventually fell by running himself out on 34 with the team’s score on 66.
Some lusty blows at the end by evergreen Purvis and young Elliott saw Humshaugh to 99-9 off their allotted overs.
The pick of Prudhoe’s bowlers was Stokoe who finished with the commendable figures of 4-19 off 11 overs.
With such a small target to defend and a much drier pitch to bat on, Humshaugh needed to bowl well and have some luck.
Maughn bowled well at the start and Williamson from the other end managed to find the edge of the bat frequently but as the saying goes if you’re going to flash, flash hard which meant the ball went over the slips’ heads or through them at a rate of knots.
Eventually Heslop fell to Elliott for 19, being given out lbw to one that stayed low but the other opener Howden ensured that there was to be no wobble.
With support from his runner due to an injury picked up in the first innings, Howden notched up his 50 but then immediately fell to Arnup afterwards.
However, it was too late as the score was on 98, and Patel, who had done the damage earlier in the day, managed to score the winning runs.

NEWTON vALLENDALENewton won by 25 runs
A welcome win for Newton, as they recorded their first victory of the season against a full strength Allendale side, the only team to do the double over them last season.
Bowery and newcomer Tate got them off to a positive start, but then both fell to the Allendale opening attack of Singh and White.
Reynolds added a few useful runs but it was the Aussie Ryan Davis who held the innings together.
Playing with a maturity which belied his relative youth, he added 73 runs with six different partners to guide Newton to a respectable 147 all out.
His innings was to prove crucial.
Despite a typical blitz by Welsh, it was Newton’s opening bowler Alan Bowery who stole the initial thunder, as he claimed the first four Allendale wickets, to leave them reeling at 35-4.
At that point, the experienced pair of Barnes and Rutherford threatened to turn the game Allendale’s way and had almost doubled the score, when acting skipper Burdon-Taylor produced his trump card.
Ed Tate was brought into the attack, and with a judicious mixture of off spin and off cutters, he effected a match winning spell of six overs, two maidens, four wickets for 10 runs.
First he removed the dangerous Barnes for a well made 41 and then ran through the tail with ease, despite a few lusty blows from White, Swann and the undefeated Richardson.
With at least four regulars due to return in the near future, including the irrepressible Hutchie, Newton could yet surprise a few teams this season.

DIVISION TWO
ALLENDALE II vNEWBROUGHNewbrough won by six runs
With both teams going into this game unbeaten the freezing conditions couldn’t prevent an excellent game of cricket.
Batting first, Newbrough rode their luck, with some lacklustre fielding from Allendale.
Johnson and Nevin scored the bulk of the runs with Johnson hitting 74, setting Allendale a useful target of 171.
Terry Sparke (59) and Chris Rutherford (47), put Allendale in an excellent position to win the match but the introduction of Scott turned the game for Newbrough with Allendale just six runs short when the last wicket fell.

HALTWHISTLE II vRIVERDALE HALLHaltwhistle won by 28 runs
Riverdale Hall elected to bowl on a cloudy day at Haltwhistle, but the track was a good one.
Good swing bowling by Roberts and McConnel tested the top order.
When they strayed off their lines though, Forster punished them with good attacking shots all round the wicket before being bowled for 39.
The remaining batsmen struggled due to tight bowling from Hutton especially.
Sheldon batted well getting an important 23 as Haltwhistle were all out for 113.
Haltwhistle took the early wickets they needed with good bowling by Forster and Kennedy.
Good thinking from Thirtle stumped Walton after he failed to get back in his crease as Haltwhistle fielded well and held their catches.
A good innings by Chard gave Riverdale Hall hope, but excellent bowling by Bell wrapped up a win for Haltwhistle.
Haltwhistle hope winning will become a habit not a memory.

WARK vSTOCKSFIELD IIIWark won by 1 wicket
On a bitterly cold day, Wark entertained Stocksfield III who won the toss and batted.
A steady start by openers Smith and Patterson before Patterson was well caught by Gordon Jeffrey for 19 out of 44.
A run out followed, but Smith kept his head, moving to a fine half century with support from Mannion.
Scoring slowed to some accurate bowling before Smith was bowled for a fine 70 and a final score of 134-5.
Wark’s innings started with a fright, young Kyle Miller in his first spell taking 4-13 in five overs with only 35 on the board.
Skipper Armstrong and John Pigg steered Wark to 69-5, before young Miller claimed a well deserved fifth wicket.
The scores were tied another wicket fell.

The match ball was sponsored by Jon Batey Building Services, Barrasford, and thanks to club sponsors The Black Bull, Wark.

Davies got Hexham’s innings off to a flying start with a hard hitting 43 but every ball was chased and boundaries cut off to keep the pressure on.
