STOCKSFIELD sisters were running hand-in-hand at this year’s Mini Great North Run.

Amy (8) and Emma Goodwin (6), both pupils at Hexham’s Beaufront First School, finished within a second of each other during the event as Amy finished second and Emma third.

Emma finished the 1500m course in a time of five minutes and 44 seconds, with Amy posting 5:43.

She was just one second off the eventual winner in a touch-tight finish.

Amy has already shown an interest in athletics and attends regular sessions for young people organised by Tynedale Harriers.

But both girls are sporty all-rounders and try their hand at a large variety of activities.

Their mother Deborah Goodwin, a PE teacher at Ovingham Middle School, said: “I was blown away with how well they both did. You just encourage them to do as many sports as they can, but to do that out of thousands of children was amazing.

“They don’t often run together as sisters, so it was brilliant that they both did so well.

“I was really shocked Emma ran so fast for a little girl, but I’m sure she was just chasing her sister!”
