A GROUP of people from Prudhoe threw themselves into the boxing ring in the name of charity.

Stuart Pearson, Andrew McElvogue, Jack Walker, Carl Dodds and Paul Robson all put themselves forward for bouts as part of fund-raising events ran by Ultra White Collar Boxing in aid of Cancer Research UK.

It was an eventful weekend for Prudhoe boxers, with the town’s professional fighter Scott Westgarth recording victory in his first outing since winning the International Challenge Belt at light heavyweight in July.

Hastily paired up against Sheffield prospect Christian Kinsiona (26), Westgarth was declared the winner on points after four close rounds at Bramall Lane, the home of Sheffield United Football Club.

Kinsiona had won all three of his professional fights previous to the meeting, but it was Westgarth who made it five wins and one draw from his opening eight.

He said: “I really enjoyed it and there was a great atmosphere. I knew it would be a close fight and it would come down to who was the better boxer on the night, and I’m glad that was me.

“I won points and it was close at 39-38 on the scorecard, but I don’t think it was as close as that. It was tough fight but the right decision, and I got the win which is all that matters.”
