A Hexham basketball side is celebrating after earning promotion in its first season as a club.

Hexham Gaolers, who are part of Hexham Basketball Club, took on Whickham Spartans in their second playoff game at the Queen Elizabeth High School on Sunday, April 14.

Holding a 63-54 aggregate lead from the first game, the Northumberland-based side were always in the driving seat ahead of the home fixture, and secured their spot in the Tynemet Basketball League Division Two after a dramatic 58-53 victory over their opposition.

However, the game didn't always go the way of the Hexham Gaolers, as they trailed 17-10 in the first quarter and 33-19 at the half.

The Spartans continued to dominate and led 43-36 ahead of the final quarter but the Hexham side staged a dramatic comeback, scoring 22 points to seal a hugely impressive win.

Head coach Chris Hignett said: "A huge well done and thank you to all involved with the club this season. I am absolutely buzzing that we have come away with a hard fought win today and secured promotion in our first season in the Tyne Met League. It wouldn't have been without the efforts of all members and the time commitment is appreciated beyond measure.

"Another big thank you to the Tynemet Basketball league, who have been fantastic at supporting the club since day one, and whose organisation has allowed us to focus on playing the game.

"A final thank you to Tyne Valley Wind and Solar, Forum Books and Trevor Hignett Body Repair Centre for their sponsorship. It goes without saying that setting up a club and entering a league comes with significant costs, and their support has made our success this season possible. More than that, it has helped to bring together a bunch of like minded people who have become a family that I'm proud to be a part of.

"There are too many people to thank and they will be acknowledged in due course. But for now, it's onwards and upwards for us and we're looking forward to seeing everyone in training again on Wednesday."
