Newcastle United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a comprehensive victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James' Park on Saturday.

Goals from Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento secured an impressive 3-0 win against the Old Gold, sending the Toon back into European contention.

Eddie Howe's side have struggled for form of late but are starting to welcome back those that have been sidelined through injury in recent months.

However, they would lose Kieran Trippier to a muscle injury early in the second half, to add to Howe's headache.

Wolves have looked a top side of late but they posed little threat at St James' Park on a dominant afternoon for the hosts, with Isak heading Newcastle in front on just 14 minutes.

Gordon ran from one box to another before slipping in Bruno Guimaraes, and the Brazillian's shot fell perfectly into Isak's path, with the Swedish striker finding the net from close range.

It was 2-0 on 33 minutes when Josh Murphy's cross wasn't dealt with, leaving Gordon with a tap-in at the back post after Jose Sa and Max Kilman inexplicably got in each other's way.

Joe Willock was inches away from adding to the scoreline in the second half when Dan Burn danced around a defender before crossing for Joe Willock, whose header was cleared off the line brilliantly by Toti.

Martin Dubravka was on hand to deny Wolves a way back into the game when he got down low to deny Nathan Fraser's long-range effort, before keeping out Pablo Sarabia's volley at the near post.

But Newcastle sealed the three points in injury time when Livramento broke forward down the right hand side, beating Craig Dawson in the box before knocking the ball into the corner as he hit the turf, for a rather fortunate first Newcastle goal.

Howe's side will be fully focused on rectifying their poor recent run and achieving a spot in Europe for next season, and they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea next Monday, before visiting Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on March 16.
