A FOOTBALLER from the district will use her skills to help raise vital funds for a children’s charity.

Rebecca George, of Prudhoe, will captain a team representing Children North East, in this year’s Concept Cup.

The five-a-side tourament will take place at the Goals complex at Gosforth Park, on Friday, September 14.

Rebecca’s team is one of 18 which have signed up to the event, with others entered from across the North-East.

Now 26, former Prudhoe High School pupil Rebecca played for the school’s football teams, before going on to represent West Tyne, Prudhoe Town, and Northumberland.

The centre-back currently plays for Wallsend in the North East Women’s Regional Football League (NEWRFL).

In her day job, Rebecca works as a project co-ordinator for Northumberland Youth Link, a peer mentoring scheme for young people run by Children North East.

The charity, which runs various initiatives to help children grow up healthily and happily, has been chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s Concept Cup.

Rebecca said: “In the Concept Cup it will be about working together and having fun.

“It’s not too serious, though it would be great if we won in the year that Children North East is the beneficiary.”

Rebecca’s team will be up against reigning champions Northumbrian Water, in what will be the annual tournament’s fifth year.

Children North East’s Carol Taylor, said: “We can never predict where our help is going to be needed. For example, a mother escaping domestic violence might turn up with her children and they need urgent feeding and clothing.

“The money raised by the Concept Cup is going to make such a difference throughout our services and we’re so grateful that they’ve chosen us.”
