THE man behind Hexham Running Festival is calling on local businesses to help make the event even bigger and better.

Last month’s festival, which included Hexham’s showpiece half marathon, and shorter 10k and 5k runs, attracted a total of 800 athletes from near and far.

But the event’s founder Greg Urwin, who now has the title of race director, has revealed the costs of putting on the big day.

The running festival has the backing of Hexham-based Egger UK, and Patricia Arnold chartered accountants, but Mr Urwin said additional support could help it grow further.

He explained: “When you look at the cost of road closures, T-shirts, medals, water, chip timing, and everything else, you’re talking £20,000.

“It does cost money for road closures, but if possible I would like to include more of Hexham town centre at the start of the route, because it is the Hexham half marathon.”

Mr Urwin, a former 800m national senior championship winner, believes the event can boost the local economy in future years.

He added: “Since we started in 2015, it has doubled in size and stature. “We are very grateful for the financial backing we already receive, but with more we can make this into a huge event, not only for Hexham, but for the wider community.

“I’d like to think that those involved with the runs use local shops and services on the day.

“I’ve heard people say that they will come back to the area for day trips and weekend breaks, because they want to visit Housesteads Roman Fort and other local attractions.

“This is a good way to put the area on the map, because it is bringing in people from outside.”

Mr Urwin joined Tynedale Harriers at the age of 11, and went on to win the 800m at the national senior championships in 2012.
