HEXHAM Golf Club has a new ladies champion, after a closely fought final.

In only her second season at the club, Susan He defeated 2016 champion June Lomax two and one, to win at the 17th hole.

June had the upper hand in the early stages after winning the first two holes.

But Susan fought back to level proceedings at the 7th, and at the turn it was still all-square.

June won the par three 10th after an excellent tee shot, but Susan evened it up again on the 12th.

She sank a good putt on the next hole to move ahead for the first time, and went two up on the par four 14th, after June found trouble with her approach to the green.

At the 16th it was Susan’s turn to get into difficulty when her tee shot missed the green to the right, and June reduced the deficit to one hole. However, on the next, Susan hit a superb approach shot and two putts were enough for her to take the match, and win the Challenge Bowl.

In the Bronze Shield, Paula Forster and Barbara Laidler also played out an extremely close encounter.

It was all square on the 18th tee, before both players hit good drives. Paula’s second landed short of the green, but Barbara struck a superb wood to within 20ft of the pin.

In true champion’s style, she sank the putt for a birdie three to win the match.
