A Grade II-listed home which is full of Victorian character is on the market, occupying an idyllic position within the Otterburn Hall Estate and surrounded by beautiful Redesdale countryside.

It was bought at auction three years ago by property developer Neil Jones and his partner, Rachael Cowens, and has been fully renovated to make a charming family home.

Equally, it could have potential as a holiday let, being close to Otterburn village in Northumberland National Park, with the area having Dark Sky status.

Neil said: “It wasn’t in a great state when we bought it, but since then we’ve fully renovated it with plumbing, rewiring and plastering.

“There’s a new kitchen and an en-suite to the master bedroom. I also reskimmed the whole house and, all in all, it took about six months to do.”

He and Rachael both hail from Otterburn where Neil runs his own business, Neil Jones Property Development, and Rachael is a farm secretary.

They have a son, four-year-old Oliver, who attends Otterburn First School.

Originally the farmhouse for Otterburn Hall, the eponymous property they are selling is a striking building of red brick with deep slate roofs.

It retains period features, including circular windows and parquet floors, which Neil sanded and re-stained, to the principal downstairs floors.

The hardwood staircase with spindles also dates from the period the home was built – the 1870s – and there are cast iron radiators.

The lounge has a multi-fuel stove in a feature brick inset, understairs cupboard and two sets of windows, while the dining room has an inset bookcase and feature fire surround. The impressive dining kitchen, which is Neil’s favourite room, has units with wooden worktops, integrated appliances, including a drinks fridge, a central island and oiled-fired Aga cooker.

The downstairs accommodation is completed by a rear boot room and a utility with built-in worktops and a cupboard. This useful space also has plumbing for a washing machine and the boiler, all illuminated by a circular window.

Storage in The Farmhouse is taken care of with two large boarded attics reached via a ladder from the landing, which also has two windows.

There are three bedrooms, the master with an en-suite shower room with tiled floor, panelled walls and Velux windows.

One of the other bedrooms has a built-in cupboard and there’s a three-piece family bathroom with tiled floor and part-tiled walls.

Outside, the property has ample driveway parking, an outside socket and a south-facing lawn with paved patio seating areas.

Neil said: “It’s a low-maintenance garden with views towards Otterburn village and the Rede Valley beyond.

“We’re moving to buy somewhere else to develop, but we’ve both lived in Otterburn all our lives so we’ll be staying here.

“I have to admit there’s not that much I’ll miss about the house as it’s been a project to me, but I think Rachael will miss it as Oliver was a baby here.”
