A Morris Minor inconvenience

THERE is a charming Morris Minor which has been parked in Corbridge Market Square for months now.

It never moves an inch and it is being used to advertise a coffee shop. The council will make a business remove an advertising board, but in this case it is powerless to act and I’m glad it is.

Corbridge Market Square is a village green and as such no council can make us pay a charge to park there.

I like that. I’m fond of a little bit of anarchy and have no wish to see an Act of Parliament forced through to remove that ancient right and give traffic wardens the right to roam in our Market Square.

Having said that, since no one can impose order we must do so ourselves; the people of Corbridge need to act and they need to act now.

We must encourage every business in the village to park, for free, a suitable vehicle in the square – a 1950s Bedford butchers van for Halls perhaps, a Rolls Royce complete with flying angel for the Angel, a flower power camper van for the florists.

The possibilities are endless and then when all the free parking has been taken up with suitably emblazoned vehicles, visitors would stop coming and we won’t need free parking any more. Simple.
