I HAVE submitted a petition to Northumberland County Council, requesting that funding be re-instated to ensure the Opus Project and Hexham Tans, remain open.

There have been two petitions submitted, one electronic and one paper, with a total of over 2,000 signatures.

The Opus project and restaurant supports people with mental health problems, back into work and also provides a place where a wide variety of people can go to eat.

It has won awards and received letters from 10 Downing Street commending them on the scheme. Visitors to the town write favourable comments in the visitors‘ book and regulars who come into Hexham to visit the Tans consequently shop in the town.

I wonder if the council would like Hexham to continue further down the route of becoming a town where people shop on the periphery at large chains or if they believe it should maintain the small, friendly and personal businesses that people visit Hexham for?

Two thousand people obviously think the latter. Please don’t let the Tans close.
