HEXHAM is in meltdown. Due to the new bus station construction, loss of parking space and long car queues leading to gridlock, this once pleasant and welcoming market town has descended into a living hell.

This is especially the case on the eastern side of the town where residents are unable to shop in the main street causing great inconvenience to retailers and public alike.

For example, to drive from east to west, or vice versa, through the town now takes half an hour at certain times.

It is not difficult to envisage that revenues from tourism will be seriously affected.

Meanwhile, despite the ongoing traffic lock down, the railway bridge leading into the town from the A69 will be closed for six weeks.

As a consequence, the enforced rerouting of traffic to enter Hexham, either at the Warden or Corbridge junctions, has the potential for serious accidents.

The timing of events is a disaster. Have a nice summer!
