DESPITE previous letters on the matter, it seems cyclists are blatantly ignoring signs stating that they must dismount whilst crossing the bridge at Wylam by the footpath.

The sign is clearly evident on both sides of the river immediately at the beginning of the footpath; yet scores of cyclists continue to flagrantly choose to ignore it.

Apart from causing a serious danger to all pedestrians, it could also cause a potential fatal accident if, as sometimes happens, pedestrians are forced to stray onto the road itself to avoid the cyclists.

Pedestrians have the legal right to use the footpath, mounted cyclists do not.

Apart from being inconvenient and dangerous, cycling on the footpath is also illegal and breaches the Road Traffic Act.

Something needs to be done sooner rather than later to bring the offenders into line before a serious accident occurs.
