ONCE again the mayor, and his fellow town council cohorts, are bleating about the car parking in Hexham (Courant, September 16).

This time it is under the guise of the perspective site of a new free car parking space. The idea of using the land that was once the old bunker site is, for once, a great idea by the town council which does not have a stellar track record on this front

However, in these times of ruthless and deep financial cuts, does the county council really have the money to invest in a new car park when more vital frontline services are at risk?

Coun. Cessford has stated that the town council has banged on about the loss of 300 long term spaces since 2014. Some of this can be laid at the door of both council entities, regarding the loss of Loosing Hill car park to the new bus station.

The only people to blame for this ongoing saga are in fact members of the town council, having blindly jumped feet first into the chance to offer free parking, they now do not have the bottle to reverse their ridiculous decision, for fear of looking foolish in the first place.

Taking into account what I have just said, should this project go ahead, why not go the whole hog and build a multi-storey car park holding 1,000 cars, and be brave and charge 30p an hour.
