IT was good to see included in your report of the tragic death of John Cousin, of Simonburn ( Courant , May 6) was a mention of the Workers' Memorial Day.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, an average of nearly three workers are killed at work every week. More people are killed at work than in wars.

Hundreds of thousands are injured. Such cases have risen in number by seven per cent since 2000.

Studies show that unionised workforces report a massive 50 per cent fewer injuries. The TUC reports that there are about 100,000 union safeft reps countrywide, and many thousands of workers are alive today because of them.
