CYCLING continues to grow exponentially in popularity and the advisory cycle lanes at Corbridge continue to play their part in making it safer to cycle in the Tyne Valley.
Except, of course, for the lead-in section of cycle lane nearest Corbridge where 10 or 12 inconsiderate motorists persist in parking across the cycle lane so forcing cyclists and vehicles into the middle of the road.
This local facility needs refining and more provided in the county. Nationally, British cycling Olympians have challenged Theresa May to make Britain an everyday cycling nation. The medal winners praised by the Prime Minister, including Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Trott and Jason Kenny, have written to the PM to say widespread segregated bike lanes would allow the two-thirds of people who want to cycle more to do so.
Our athletes have inspired the country and they now urge the Government to take cycling seriously as a transport option for everyone in the UK whether for utility or recreational purposes.
Cycling UK, OpenMTB, Tyne Valley MTB Cycling, local and visiting cyclists welcome the fact that Northumberland County Council has made the effort to provide safer cycling for most of the route in and out of Corbridge in a way that increases drivers’ awareness of their speed, road positioning and the safety of other road users.
