HOW Hexham Market Place has changed over the years! While there are some familiar features on this fabulous old photograph, such as the Shambles Market and the pant - for many years the only source of clean water for both animals and humans in the town – others have altered as much as the ladies’ outfits. Long gone are the premises in front of the Moot Hall, including Ching’s Central Tearooms, although you can still see where they were keyed into the Moot Hall today. Many will still remember Cato’s shop in what is now Betfred, as well as Edward Riddle‘s draper’s shop which went on to become Bell and Riddle’s, the chemists. There’s also a view of the Black Bull pub before it became the Ex-Servicemen’s Club.
