ONE of the key figures behind the annual Northumberland County Show has had a brush with royalty at an event which aims to support agricultural shows across the country.

Judy Willis, event organiser of the Bywell show which attracts more than 25,000 visitors to Tynedale each year, had the honour of meeting the Countess of Wessex at the annual conference of the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations (ASAO) earlier this month.

The countess, who is patron of the ASAO, attended the three-day event to share her knowledge and meet the delegates celebrating the 60th anniversary of the organisation.

“The countess was absolutely charming, and contributed to our discussions with knowledge and enthusiasm,” said Judy.

“She’s clearly passionate about agricultural shows and it was a great pleasure to meet her.”

The ASAO stages a conference every year, hosted by one of its members.

This year, the one-day Devon shows teamed up to host the event in Torquay between November 6 and 8.

Show managers and secretaries from across the country took part in a programme of seminars, panel discussions with keynote speakers and group sessions focusing on relevant industry issues.

Judy explained: “It’s an excellent opportunity for show organisers to share experiences, exchange ideas and tackle ongoing challenges, with a view to keeping Britain’s shows dynamic.

“The pre-conference leisure activities and a chance to chat to other show practitioners over dinner make it a wonderful social occasion too.”

Judy acted as chairman alongside the Countess of Wessex during one of the event’s syndicate sessions, in which 15 representatives from shows around the country discussed subjects ranging from recruiting volunteers, advertising, membership and communication.

Despite being the largest agricultural show in the North-East, organisers of the county show say they are committed to helping smaller shows grow and thrive too.

With that in mind, to share inspiration and best practice, Judy joined show secretary Kerry Robson to host a North-East ASAO gathering as a follow-up to the national event.

The meeting, held at Hexham Mart’s board room, was attended by organisers from Gilsland, Slaley, Alwinton and Whalton Shows.

“It’s great that so many of the local shows are putting time and energy into finding ways to improve and develop,” added Judy.

“Adopting new ideas not only benefits visitors, but also helps to safeguard their future.

“Our agricultural heritage is celebrated at these events and we want to see them all thrive.”
