YOUNGSTERS from a Tynedale first school became immersed in the life of the 1960s to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their school.

Broomhaugh C of E First School held a 1967 day last Wednesday to mark 50 years since the school moved from the old school building, which is now a house, to its current premises on Church Lane.

The move actually took place in July 1967, but not wanting to miss an opportunity to get dressed up, children and staff decided to hold the event on their return to school after the summer holidays.

Children were invited to come into school wearing 1960s clothing, while they played traditional school games, including charades, learned about what life was like in 1967 and enjoyed a 1960s tea party.

“We are looking at films from 1967 too. It’s interesting because Jungle Book, the original animation, and Doctor Dolittle were both released in 1967 and those are films that the children have seen,” said headteacher Jen Stephenson.

“The reception class were certainly quite shocked that there were no mobile phones, no computers and no iPads then, and that for those who had TV, it was black and white – the first colour broadcast was actually in 1967.

“We have got some old photos of the building so the children have been able to see what has happened since it opened and how the school has grown.

“As well as a lot of fun, it’s also making them aware of how the school has changed and what life was like in 1967.”
