MOWDEN Hall School held a Roald Dahl- themed day to celebrate the 100th birthday of the much-loved children’s author.

On Tuesday, September 13, the school immersed itself in Roald Dahl-inspired activities and games, where children could explore the stories and adventures the storyteller created.

There was a crossword trail, where answers were hidden in creative places around the school to a Roald Dahl-themed crossword.

There was also a book quiz and opportunities for the children to come up with design ideas such as ‘design your own chocolate bar’.

In the morning, staff took the time to share their own early memories of reading Roald Dahl’s stories with the children.

Becky Hadfield, head librarian at the independent school in Newton, near Stocksfield, was involved in planning the day for the three to 13-year-olds.

She said: “There has been a lot going on in the school to celebrate what Roald Dahl brings to reading and learning.

“His books have been on display and the activities have been designed to help the children explore his adventures.

“Even lunch has been Roald Dahl-themed!”

Mowden Hall’s lunch menu had a Gobblefunk quiz inside, and included dishes such as wormy spaghetti and meatballs and swigpill salad.

Mrs Hadfield added: “It is a great way to get us thinking about how central reading is to learning.

“Roald Dahl’s stories can inject humour, making us laugh and have fun while learning, which is so important, and it’s also very hard to make people laugh.

“It’s good that we can celebrate that.”
