A TYNEDALE man clocked up 99 miles as he ran non-stop for 24 hours.

Ultra runner Matt Cawood, of Newton, raised a total of £1,779 for Tynedale Hospice at Home as he and his brother James, of Reading, recently ran a continuous seven-and-a-half mile loop in Keswick, in the Lake District.

The brothers took on the gruelling challenge in memory of their late father, John, who died of sarcoma in 2016.

Matt said: “Running the same loop over a 24-hour period requires a different type of stamina to marathon running. In a marathon, every mile you clock up is a mile closer to the finish line, but running a continuous loop means you’re never any closer to the end.

“It was definitely a case of training your mind to keep focused and motivated.

“I think some of the hardest moments were between 1am and 3am with the rain lashing down in the pitch black and you just couldn’t see where you were going.

The brothers were supported by family and friends for bits of the run, which provided a much-needed boost.

Tynedale Hospice at Home’s community fund-raiser Cathy Bates said: “This really is an incredible achievement and we can’t thank Matt enough for his amazing fund-raising efforts. I feel exhausted just thinking about the miles he clocked up ”
