A £74,000 scheme to provide safe off-road access to a busy Tynedale roundabout is nearing completion.

Northumberland County Council says a scheme to enable cyclists and pedestrians to negotiate Riding Mill’s Broomhaugh Roundabout was prompted by “several recorded accidents” involving cyclists.

A new wider tarmacked pavement, allowing cyclists to leave the main carriageway and join a shared path alongside the road and roundabout, before rejoining the A695 beyond the junction, is expected to be completed by Wednesday.

A council spokeswoman said: “The work has been carried out during restricted hours to lessen the impact on the travelling public at peak times. The work is due for completion Wednesday, February 8.

“The cost of the work is being funded by Government money which is earmarked specifically for cycle improvements.

“The scheme has the support of local councillors.”
