A YEAR of celebration was kicked off in style recently as Prudhoe Methodist Church celebrates 150 years in the town.

The first of a series of commemorative events to mark the church’s landmark anniversary was held on Saturday, April 23.

The community open day featured stalls from 24 local groups and organisations.

Children enjoyed music, crafts and face painting activities.

And a special ‘vintage corner’ and a display of Prudhoe memorabilia paid tribute to the church’s long history in the town.

The church, on West Road in Prudhoe, was built in December 1866 and is now a key part of the town’s community.

One of the organisers, Margaret Glendinning, said: “It was a huge success, the stalls were wonderful and the camaraderie between the groups was remarkable.

“It was very well supported, we were busy the whole time.

“The atmosphere was wonderful and it was an excellent start to a year of celebration.”

Saturday’s open day will be followed by a flower festival on June 24, 25 and 26.

The festival will be on the theme of the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, who visited Prudhoe in 1757.

On September 17, different churches in Prudhoe will come together for a special praise evening. And on December 3, a special Christmas celebration is planned.
