PEOPLE power has won the day after councillors agreed to install street lights on a Prudhoe road.

A petition calling for action had gathered over 150 signatures.

A petition set up by Laura Rusby was discussed at the meeting of the Tynedale local area council on Tuesday night.

It called for appropriate street lighting to be installed on Moor Road, between Moor Grange and the entrance to Humbles Wood and the Ferndene centre.

The petition stated that the footpath was heavily populated by woodland and used by residents, visitors and hospital staff 24 hours per day.

“Currently there is no street lighting on this under maintained, dark, narrow road,” it said.

Speaking at the meeting, Mrs Rusby said that the road was the only access route in and out of the Ferndene estate.

“Staff and residents feel so strongly about it they are left with no option but to use cars or taxis outside of daylight hours in order for them to feel safe,” she added.

Coun. Gordon Stewart said that no contribution from the developers was asked for re-lighting at the planning stage.

Councillors agreed to support the work to install 15 street lights, which according to a report presented to councillors by an officer, will cost £37,500.

Prudhoe county councillors Gordon Stewart and Ken Stow have agreed to look at funding some of the work through their members allowances, while the rest of the funding would come within future local transport plan programmes.
