A STONE cherub that has stood atop a Prudhoe fountain for more than a century has been snatched by mindless vandals.

The fountain has stood in the old hospital building site at Ferndene since 1904.

It was commissioned by the managing director of Swan Hunter, Colonel Swan, when he bought the hall.

Gentoo Homes had planned to restore the stone fountain during its development of the site.

However, between 12.20am and 5am on Monday, intruders came on to the site and smashed the fountain.

They then snatched the ornamental cherub before making off unseen.

Head of development for Gentoo Homes Brendon Ferguson said: “This kind of mindless vandalism to such a historic part of the site is particularly saddening.

“The fountain has stood undamaged for over 100 years and was planned to be renovated and restored to its original position within the grounds of Prudhoe Hall as part of the conservation plan.

“We hope that someone comes forward as soon as possible, as we’d like to have the fountain restored to its former glory where it belongs.”

Witnesses, or anyone with information, are asked to contact the police.

Officers are also keen to hear from anyone who may be offered the cherub for sale.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting reference number 152 of 15/08/16 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
