At last week’s meeting of the town council it was agreed to set aside £5,000 to spruce up the toilets at Road Ends.
A Northumberland County Council surveyor has estimated that repairs to the building’s interior would cost £5,000. And bringing the interior up to scratch would come to a bill of £10,000.
Chairman of the town council and town mayor, Coun. Jennifer McGee told the council that £10,000 would be contributed by county council.
But county councillor, Eileen Burt, said: “I just feel as if somehow this is good money after bad. I’m not confident that the county council maintain those toilets to the standards we want.
“Might it not be better to have them transferred to us and we will be able to maintain them to the right standard as a long-term solution.”
The town council agreed to allocate £5,000 in principle but it would consider transferring the asset into its ownership in the future.
