SPORTING stars of the future met some of the region’s top rugby players in Mickley this week.

Newcastle Falcons players Dan Temm and George McGuigan – both of whom also play for Tynedale – paid a visit to Mickley First School to officially open their new sports area.

A £30,000 multi-use games area has been built with facilities for five-a-side football, netball and basketball.

The new sports area has been built using money from Sport England’s National Lottery funded Primary School Facilities Fund.

After the official opening on Monday, the children enjoyed their first PE lessons using the brand new facility.

Headteacher Andrew Hudson said: “Our PE co-ordinator Lynsey Briddock has been organising this for the past two years. It has been a real labour of love.

“It took six weeks to complete and we’re absolutely thrilled with it.

“In a Victorian School you get used to making compromises with the facilities.

“But this is something that is purpose built and the children will get a great deal of use and enjoyment from it for years to come.”
