PLANS for a second housing estate in Eltringham have attracted opposition from Prudhoe residents and councillors alike.

In September last year, Horizon Products won outline planning permission to build 50 homes on land neighbouring the old Eltringham Works site.

The development would sit to the south of homes on North Row. And residents of the street submitted objections to the plans at the time.

Horizon Products purchased the works from AzkoNobel in 2015, as well as land neighbouring the factory.

Now the chemical manufacturing and filling company has submitted new proposals for the parcel of land.

A pre-application consultation on the latest plans, for 25-30 homes on land west of Horizon Products, was considered at last week’s meeting of Prudhoe Town Council’s planning committee.

As the proposal is at the pre-application stage, there are few details.

However it seems that the proposed homes would be built on land to the north and east of North Row.

Residents of the street are once again objecting to the proposals which, combined with the existing planning permission, would see the street nearly surrounded by new developments.

Rowland McGlen said: “We have a beautiful view and this second development will be right at the bottom of our gardens.

“That land hasn’t had homes on it before and there are badger setts and deer there.

“The whole of North Row is against this; we don’t want it.”

These concerns were echoed at last week’s planning meeting, as councillors agreed to object to the new proposals.

In its response, Prudhoe Town Council listed the impact on existing residents of the development and concerns about drainage as its reasons.

Land stability issues were also cited, as the site adjoins the railway line, not far from the scene of a serious landslip.

The council was also concerned that as the site was greenfield, any development would lead to a loss of bio-diversity.

In its response the town council also included information from the 2016 Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA).

Site number 6839, Eltringham Works, is described in the report as ‘not suitable’ for development due to existing employment allocation, highways constraints, possible contamination issues and because the site is detached from the residential area of Prudhoe by the bypass.

Horizon Products declined to comment.
