PRUDHOE looks set to welcome four poignant figures to stand at its entrances.

At the last meeting of Prudhoe Town Council, members considered whether they would like to take part in the Silent Soldier campaign.

The campaign, run by the Royal British legion, is inviting councils, individuals and businesses to mark the sacrifice of those who fell in the four years of the First World War leading up to the Armistice in November, 1918.

They are invited to purchase a 5ft tall soldier silhouette which can be placed in a public space, buildings, gardens, fields or roundabouts.

The weatherproof silhouettes are free-standing and have iron posts to secure them into the ground.

Councillors agreed to purchase four of the silent soldiers, at £250 each – three to stand at the town’s entrances and one to be sited in Mickley.

However, it was agreed that before making the purchase, the council would get more information on how deep the iron posts would secure the soldiers into the ground, to prevent them being removed.

The soldiers are intended to stand in place from when they arrive until late 2018.
