PUBLIC toilets in Prudhoe have suffered another attack by vandals, only months after they were refurbished.

Council workers were informed of the damage to the Road Ends toilets on Wednesday, although it was thought the attack could have happened last weekend.

The toilets, which lock automatically at 6pm, had been forced open. Inside, locks on toilet doors were broken and a toilet roll holder ripped from the wall.

The Road Ends toilets were officially re-opened after a £15,000 refurbishment on August 24, and suffered damage less than four weeks later when a door was ripped off, a toilet seat was broken and beer bottles were scattered over the floor.

Coun. Gordon Stewart said: “We need to start letting people how much this is costing the council because it’s expensive and it’s also detracting from what we are trying to do in Prudhoe in terms of increasing footfall in shops and attracting people to the town for tourism – and I’m concerned about that.

“It’s very annoying and it just seems totally pointless.”

Coun. Stewart said reports in the town of anti-social behaviour are also received from around the areas of Prudhoe Waterworld, Prudhoe Castle and The Glade, off Front Street.

“We are currently working with Prudhoe East Centre, the police and the town council and other agencies to deal with the situation and encourage people to use their time better and engage in other activities,” he added.

In September a new initiative, Prudhoe Community Alcohol Partnership, was launched to bring local organisations together including Safer Northumberland, Northumbria Police, the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and local retailers, to tackle underage drinking.
