CHILDREN from a Prudhoe First School have been taking ownership of their local park by creating posters to promote keeping it clean and tidy when it reopens.

Key Stage 2 pupils at Adderlane Academy designed signs reflecting issues such as dog fouling, graffiti and litter, to be displayed in Eastwoods Park, which is currently undergoing renovations.

The new £95,000 park will combine a toddler area and an area for older children.

It will feature a 20m zip-slide, two basket swings, a hurricane swing and an inclusive roundabout and multi-play area.

Northumberland County Council contributed £50,000 towards the bill, with Prudhoe Town Council contributing £30,000 and the remaining £15,000 paid by former county councillor Tony Reid from his member’s allowance.

Children at Adderlane Academy were among those consulted on how the renovated park should look. And to make sure the new park will be looked after, pupils have designed posters around the different ideas of park etiquette under the heading of “Proud of our park”.

Last week, they walked along to check on how the work was coming along and hand over their posters. Thirty four posters were handed to the builders by pupils Kayleigh Hewitt, Sophia Forster, Andrew Simpson and Grace Weatherley, who were chosen because of the enthusiasm and ideas expressed in their own designs.

Headteacher Emma Potts said: “Designing the posters helped them recognise the issues around looking after the park and they valued that their ideas were going to be displayed.

“We also got to meet the team who were busy with the construction. Now, hopefully the children should have a real feeling of ownership of the park.”

The renovations are due to be complete before the October half-term.
