SCHOOLCHILDREN in Prudhoe were rewarded for their enthusiasm to get active last week.

St Matthew’s RC Primary School was presented with the prize for most participants in the Prudhoe Miners’ Race this year.

The Essity Prudhoe Miners’ Race was held on October 1 and had events specifically for children, with a 3km race for 11 to 16-year-olds along with a 1.5km event for five to 10-year-olds.

To encourage more youngsters to get involved, Prudhoe Town Council, which is one of the event’s partners, offered a prize of £250 from its events budget to the school with the most entries.

The winner was calculated based on the highest percentage of entries from the school roll, from all of the schools within the Prudhoe Schools Partnership.

From St Matthew’s RC Primary School, 26 per cent of pupils took part in the race – out-performing all of the other schools.

On Friday, Mayor of Prudhoe, Coun. Gerry Price presented children at St Matthews Primary School with the cheque for £250.

The prize money will to be spent on sports equipment for the school.
