SCHOOL is out again for Prudhoe pupils as workmen prepare to repair their rain damaged school.

Prudhoe West First school will be closed to all children for one day on Friday February 5.

The 110-year old building has been severely affected by recent extreme rainfall.

Water has infiltrated the school roof, raising concerns that the old lath and plaster ceiling, above the modern suspended ceiling, could fall.

This has made a number of classrooms unsafe to use, with some children now taking their lessons at the Fuse Media Centre.

Writing to update parents, headteacher Carrie Davison reported that county council officers were intending to begin repairing the school next week.

Work will start on the internal areas of the Key Stage Two area of the school on Monday February 8.

However, before repair work can begin the area needs to be entirely cleared in preparation.

Some of the building remains out of bounds, with children accommodated in various locations around the school for lessons.

But by March is is hoped that some classes will return to the classroom, with more relocated by the end of April.

In her letter, Mrs Davison thanked parents for their continued patience and wrote: "This is much quicker than we had originally been informed so is great news."

Work to repair the external roof and conservatory is expected to follow later.
