A DAWN ’til dusk rounders and softball match in Prudhoe has raised £2,205 for two good causes.

The mammoth game was organised by a group of 12 men who all either live, have lived or work in Prudhoe, and took place on Saturday, December 10 at the town’s Eastwood Park.

Now, after totalling up their final amount, the group have been able to hand out cheques to their two chosen charities; the Royal British Legion and The Grafters Club at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Craig Sewell, from Prudhoe, one member of the group, said: “It was supposed to be a 12 hour match but because of the dark nights we ended up playing from dawn until dusk.

“We literally played from when we could see until we couldn’t see anymore.

“We followed it up by going round the pubs of Prudhoe to have some well earned drinks and collected during the course of that evening.

“It was a good day - there was a good contingent of us and then supporters came and went throughout the day.

“It goes to show what a few community minded people can do in terms of raising money for good causes, and we are very grateful for the generosity of local people and their commitment to support charities.”

The group take part in fund-raising activities every year, with the Royal British Legion being the usual beneficiary for their December fund-raiser, as many of them are ex-service people.

But this year, the Grafters Club, a unit for children and their families who have experienced burns, received the largest share of the money raised.

Craig added: “One group member’s son was involved in an accident and was treated there for burns last year.

“They were instrumental in the rehabilitation of the little boy so we wanted to show our support. He came down for a little while to support us on the day too.”

The group are already organising for a summer fund-raising day, which will also benefit the Grafters Club.
