KNOWN and loved by many in her town, it should come as no surprise that Prudhoe’s Joan Russell has been named as one of the first community champions.

The Hexham Constituency Community Champion Awards is a new scheme launched last month by MP Guy Opperman.

Certificates will be awarded on a monthly basis, recognising extraordinary charitable, community, educational, business and sporting achievements.

Joan has been named as one of the first to receive a community champion award.

Her letter from Mr Opperman praised her dedication to the local community through her work with the Prudhoe Community Allotment, Prudhoe Walled Garden Working Group and the Royal Voluntary Service.

Mr Opperman said: “I have known Joan for a number of years through her work with the Prudhoe Community Allotment and various other community projects. People like Joan are what make our communities thrive and she is a very worthy recipient of the award.”

Joan was one of the driving forces behind Prudhoe Community Allotment at its launch 16 years ago.

Officially opened in 2006 by the Duke of Northumberland, the community facility on Redwell Court is a vital resource for members with learning disabilities or mental health issues.

Joan has also worked as a key member of the Prudhoe Walled Garden working group for a number of years.

She said the award came as a complete surprise: “I had no idea until I received the letter. It’s absolutely wonderful.

“I like to help people. I like to work in the community, with the community and supporting the community.”
