THE annual Prudhoe People’s Treat is one of the most beloved events in the town’s calendar and the festive meal for the over-60s was as popular as ever this week.

Speaking as the first of three days of festivities got under way, county councillor Gordon Stewart said: “As part of my job, I get to go around telling people what’s great about Prudhoe.

“I always say it’s the people.”

During the festive meal, guests were treated to a ham salad and soup, followed by entertainment from a local band, a raffle and bingo.

Carol Chisholm said: “It’s absolutely fantastic, I wouldn’t miss it for the world. This is the only time we all get together; we couldn’t ask for any more.”

The treat is now in its 111th year and the support from volunteers and businesses makes it all possible.

Asda and the Co-op were both involved this year, providing prizes, food and staff.

Asda community champion Lynn Ivison has been involved in the treat for 18 years – and despite being eligible for the Treat herself next year, she has no plans to let up.

Lynn said: “It’s not something you just help out with; it’s something that you feel.

“All of the businesses are here together because they realise how much it means to the community.”

The festive meal took place in the decked out Prudhoe Social Club and staff from the town’s Co-op volunteered at the event.

Store manager Iain Watt said: “The Co-op has been supporting the event for a few years. We donated about £2,000 and a dozen staff are giving up their time free of charge.”

Prudhoe residents may notice a slight name change this year.

Explaining the change, Lynn added: “We used to call it the Aged People’s Treat.

“But now it’s just the people’s treat, because 60 is the new 40!”
