THE annual Horsley Parish Council meeting was held on Monday, May 16.

Residents’ issues raised were the lack of grass cutting along the many verges through the village and the lack of road sweeping through the village and surrounding areas.

It was noted that it is getting more and more difficult to maintain any engagement with Northumberland County Council which, it appears, is mainly due to the turnover of staff.

Another issue raised was the Horsley postcode of NE15, which can cause problems with the allocation of school places for some parents, particularly in Wylam and Ovingham.

An overview of the past year’s matters was highlighted, such as the revitalisation of the war memorial which is proceeding now a specialised contractor has been found.

Thanks were given to various people – the website being maintained by Mandy Senior, the footpaths being kept clear by Maurice Holliday, myself for writing the notes for the Courant and Terry Mulligan for all his work keeping the village as pretty as it is and looking after the war memorial site.

The financial report was read, which was slightly over budget due to the necessary replacement of the roundabout in the village park.

BT has disconnected the two telephone boxes, although they have not been removed completely.

THE service at Horsley Village Church on Sunday, at 11am, will be led by Brian Spurr.

PLANS for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations on Saturday, June 11, are progressing nicely.

Fliers have gone out, but if you didn’t receive one, please let me know on (01661) 853833.

The marquee will be set up behind the Lion and Lamb, with free entry to the fun day.

There will be a mix of stalls, together with children’s fancy dress, magic show, Irish dancers, face painting, music and barbecue and loads of fun competitions.

A full programme of events will be distributed prior to the event. We just need the weather ! It would be great if everyone could hang a Union Flag somewhere on their property on the day.
