PEOPLE of all ages are being invited to take part in an historic event at the weekend.

Sunday marks the return of the Prudhoe Miners’ Race, which will see adults take on a 10km route in and around the town and children tackle shorter routes.

The modern event is now in its sixth year as Prudhoe Town Council, town-based tissue makers Essit – formerly SCA Hygiene – and Run Northumberland have again joined forces to appeal to a wide audience.

The Essity Prudhoe Miners’ 10k starts at 10am and follows a scenic route around the town.

The event is part of the Run Northumberland race series and operates under UK Athletics rules.

Little legs can also follow in the footsteps of East Tynedale’s mining heritage in the junior 3km run for those aged between 11 and 16 and a 1.5km mini run for children between the ages of five and 10.

The junior events are held after the adult race on a flat, traffic-free course at Tyne Riverside Country Park.

The original Prudhoe Miners’ Race dates back to the early 20th century. It came to an end in the wake of the Second World War and was resurrected in 2012 to mark the London Olympics.
