PRUDHOE will be a hive of activity on Friday as the town relaunches its market.

A monthly market was established in the town centre two years ago.

Stalls filled with artisan goods and a wide range of fresh produce attracted hundreds of shoppers to the first event.

However, as the months went on the numbers of stall-holders coming to the market began to diminish.

By October 2015 there were just four stalls at the market, which was described as “disappointing” by town mayor at the time, Coun. Eileen Burt.

But from Friday a weekly open-air market hopes to boost shopping trips to Prudhoe.

New traders have been secured, and stalls will be open for business from 9am to 2pm every Friday from this week.

The market will take place in the Glade area, off Front Street.

Town mayor and chairman of Prudhoe Town Council, Coun. Jennifer McGee, said: “Prudhoe Town Council welcomes, and is delighted to support, the relaunch of the Prudhoe Market.

“The council sees the market as a real boost for the town, and very much hopes that local residents and visitors alike will be attracted to the excellent range of products on offer.

“The town council is delighted to work in partnership with the county council in establishing the Prudhoe Market as a central part of the life of the town and surrounding area.”

To encourage more traders to get involved, Northumberland County Council is offering pitches for just £1 for the next six weeks.

Deputy business chairwoman of Northumberland County Council, Coun. Liz Simpson, is the council’s market champion.

She said: “Markets play a very important part in supporting the local economy, expanding the retail opportunities for residents and visitors.

“As a council we want to support towns across Northumberland to get the best from their markets, and in Prudhoe we have been working with the town council in a bid to regenerate the market there.

“I hope that people will come out and support the market – where they will find a host of friendly knowledgeable traders selling a range of quality goods.”

Traders or shoppers wishing to know more about the market should contact Northumberland County Council’s market manager Neil Brown on 07909 688174. Traders must have their own stall, equipment and insurance.
