A FAMILY fun day will take place in Prudhoe to thank nurses for the continued help they give a toddler badly scalded 18 months ago.

The Hillary family are hosting the event at the town’s Dr Syntax pub between 1pm and 5pm on Saturday in aid of The Grafters Club, which provides support to children and their families who have suffered burns injuries in the North-East and Cumbria.

Jace Hillary was just 18 months old when he accidentally tipped boiling water on himself, knocking a newly poured cup of tea from the kitchen bench with a broom handle.

Skin started to peel from the affected areas immediately and his face started to swell.

In the following weeks, the youngster spent time in the Royal Victoria Infirmary hospital in Newcastle as he required two skin grafts.

At the time, his five-year-old sister Alyssa was praised by the emergency services for providing vital in the care as she kept her calm to liaise with the call handler on 999 and unlocked the door for the ambulance driver to enter the premises.

To thank The Grafters Club, which still regularly checks on Jace’s progress, father Michael and mother Tarnya are inviting local people to enjoy the many activities planned as part of the family fun day.

There will be a bouncy castle and fun and games for children, bingo, a barbecue, a raffle and toy sale, as well as a Fifa 18 competition.

“The accident was a horrific experience for the entire family, but especially Jace, and we wanted to do something to say thank you for all the excellent support we have received,” said Tarnya.

“They still monitor him every three months and we want to give something back because they have been there every step of the way.”
