And the continued problem of careless motorists causing traffic chaos on Highfield Lane has led to plans for new parking restrictions in the town.
Last summer, the issues of double-parked cars obstructing narrow roads and vehicles parking on pavements, was raised at the annual town meeting.
Following the meeting, Northumberland County Council offered to discuss the issues with the schools, town councils and parent governor to develop possible solutions.
And plans have now been announced to impose double yellow lines on Highfield Lane.
The county council proposes to introduce double yellow lines from Highfield Park down to the Church of Our Lady and St Cuthbert.
An area at the entrance to Highfield Middle School will have ‘School Keep Clear’ restrictions with no waiting between 8.30am and 9.30am and 2.45pm and 3.30pm, from Monday to Friday.
A stretch of the road between Highfield Middle School and the church will have a single yellow line, with no waiting between 8.30am and 9.30am and 2.45pm and 3.30pm, from Monday to Friday on the side nearest the school.
The council says the proposals are a result of concerns raised by St Matthews Catholic Primary School, Highfield Middle School, parents, and local residents.
The deadline for comments during a public consultation on the plans is October 19.
