ENRAGED councillors, residents and young people in Prudhoe are demanding answers over a decision to sell the town’s youth centre.

In the face of ferocious public opposition, county council leader Coun, Grant Davey halted the decision to sell the East Centre, which had been made without consultation.

At last week’s meeting of Prudhoe Town Council, anger was expressed that no-one at the local authority appeared willing to take responsibility for the misjudged move.

Residents and young people attended the meeting, as did Sharon Pearson and John Smith from youth services.

However, Mr Smith told the meeting: “I can answer questions with regard to youth service delivery but I can’t speak on behalf of strategic estates; I don’t know who has led the decision.

“All I know was in January we were told we would be moving out; we were told to go and scope out The Fuse Centre as an alternative base.”

County councillor, Eileen Burt told the meeting that she had contacted Coun. Davey, chief executive Steve Mason and deputy chief executive, Daljit Lally in the wake of the shock news.

She said: “They all said they were told this was a good idea and people would be happy to move to The Fuse.

“Daljit Lally said that it was in Prudhoe Town Plan and I told her that there is no Prudhoe Town Plan.”

Coun. Bryan Futers said: “The two people who have turned up tonight have our sympathy.

“Somebody down the line has made that decision and they’re not prepared to stand up and come to this council, face the young people and say why.”
