THE people of Mickley enjoyed another bumper year at their annual leek show.

The annual event, held across Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, saw Mickley Social Club packed out with leeks, other vegetables and sweet and savoury treats in the industrial classes.

John Graham came in first place with his paired leeks measuring 156.28 cu ins.

Second place went to George Barton with his paired leeks measuring 134.75 cu ins and Paul Tailford took third place with a pair of leeks measuring 130.21 cu ins.

The main show took place on Saturday, with crowds filling the venue to admire the hard work put into the exhibits, while later in the day, local singer Kevin Beadle provided the entertainment and members of the community enjoyed a supper courtesy of the leek club members.

Sunday brought with it an auction of the produce, as well as leek and potato soup for everyone to enjoy.

Club member Richie Ghani said this year’s children’s entries were superb, with best dressed vegetable won by eight-year-old Olivia Furness.

“For the children’s section we link in with Mickley school,” he said. “We went and gave little hand-outs to everybody and let them know they could enter for free, and the prize money is really quite good.

“The idea is to encourage them to take part in local events and also to grow things.

“It’s a very, very successful event and we had lots of good feedback saying people really enjoyed it. We’re looking forward to taking it on again next year.”
