THE organisers of a mountain bike race in which a spectator from Prudhoe was fatally injured are to stand trial.

Judith Garrett (29) died from head injuries in hospital the day after being struck by a bike which careered off the course at Ty’n y Graig, near Llangollen, in North Wales, in August 2014.

She was among the spectators to cheer on her partner, Peter Walton, take part in a downhill race.

Last week, two race officials and the British Cycling Federation were called before Mold Crown Court to face health and safety charges.

The federation, which sanctioned the race, was charged with failing to conduct its undertaking in such a way as to ensure the health and safety of the people attending.

Race official Michael Marsden (40), from Lancaster, was charged with failing to conduct the event in such a way that people were not exposed to risk.

In addition, he was accused of failing to ensure the safety of spectators and failing to provide marshals with adequate training regarding the safety of spectators.

Marshal Kevin Ian Duckworth (41), of Accrington, was charged with failing to ensure that his health and safety duties were complied with.

Not guilty pleas were made in relation to all charges. Duckworth and Marsden were given unconditional bail.

A four-week trial is expected to take place in June next year.

Judith was the daughter of Bill and Lorna Garrett, both former mayors of Prudhoe.
