PRUDHOE gardeners showed off their hard work to the whole town last week at their Community Allotment open day.

Established in 2000, Prudhoe Community Allotment was designed for gardeners with reduced mobility and physical disabilities.

The site is divided into lots of small, easily manageable plots, and there are raised beds and wheelchair-friendly paths.

It is managed by volunteers and provides opportunities for older and the less able gardeners to experience the pleasure of growing their own produce.

The annual allotment open day took place on Wednesday. As well as admiring the hard work and picking up gardening tips, the open day allowed visitors to pick up home-grown vegetables, plants and flowers for their own gardens.

Prudhoe Community Allotment secretary Jo Bentley said: “This year the beds were ablaze with nasturtiums and calendula in flower. Onions, courgettes, beetroot, rhubarb and freshly-dug potatoes were all snapped up and the greenhouse provided newly-ripened tomatoes.

“The allotment president Guy Opperman, a regular visitor, promoted the day on Facebook and to everyone’s delight the sun shone – most of the time!”

The allotment, on Redwell Court, is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10am to 12pm.
