A PRUDHOE schoolboy is seeing red in his determined fight to support his mum through cancer.

Alex Graham (14) has dyed his hair a shocking shade of red to raise money for the Macmillan nurses who have helped his family.

In 2014, mum Angela (44) was diagnosed with bowel cancer, but after months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy she was given the all-clear in spring 2015.

Tragically, later that same year a scan found the cancer had returned and had spread to her lungs and liver.

The family was devastated by the diagnosis, but Alex, a student at Prudhoe Community High School, decided to take action.

He said: ‘“My mam’s not well and I know other people must be suffering the same way.

“I wanted to do something to help other people as well as making my mam proud.

“I was thinking of dying my hair anyway so I thought why not do something whacky for charity at the same time?

“The Macmillan nurses have really helped us and I’m grateful to them.”

Prudhoe Community High School agreed to relax its uniform policy in Alex’s case so, on January 29, a family friend at the Main Street Barbers, in Wallsend, transformed his hair from light brown to bright red.

Dad, Clive (44) joined Alex at the barbers for moral support, never suspecting that he would leave with a bright new look himself.

Alex, who has an older brother Lawrence (17), said: “After they finished my hair there was extra dye left over so I told dad he had to get his done as well, and he did.”

Mum Angela was at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle when Alex and Graham underwent their makeovers.

She said: “It was visiting hours and all of a sudden I saw the pair of them walking over to me with that hair; I couldn’t believe it!”

Originally hoping to raise around £50, Alex was astonished to see his total leap up to £100 after just two days.

To date, he has raised over £300 through sponsorship and his Go Fund Me web page.

Angela, who had her own cleaning business before falling ill, said: “I’m just so proud of him – to do all of this all off his own bat.

“He’s a lovely young man and he has been my rock.”
