WORLD Cup fever did not deter hundreds of people from flocking to Prudhoe’s popular annual event, Highfield Fest, on Sunday.

The event at Highfield Park attracted over 500 people who basked in the glorious summer weather and packed their day with activities.

A sea of colourful faces flooded the park thanks to the popular Painted Faces by Julie Charlton, who has attended every year since the fair began, with a non-stop queue for face paint from 11am until 5pm.

A mini run and assault course was provided by Prudhoe Plodders and both young and old athletes got stuck in. Contestants were timed crawling under a cargo net, collecting objects and dropping them into hoops, before weaving in and out of cones to the finish flag – and the mini racers were given a certificate and chocolate for their efforts.

And treasure hunters took part in Prudhoe Pathforce’s hunt on the day with clues all around the park.

Meanwhile Mick Scrimshaw from the Prudhoe East Motor Project brought along a kit car that had been built in the workshop to interest older visitors.

Happy Faces, a Prudhoe-based inclusive youth group, had a tent with play dough for the younger visitors while older visitors had help to make stress balls from balloons and flour.

The activity, run by Coun. Angie Scott and her Mum Dot Dickinson, proved so popular that several trips to re-stock on balloons and flour had to be made.

Prudhoe’s famous Mr Disco Man kept crowds entertained with music and homemade ‘The Cube’ style games, and NBK Leisure provided a rodeo sheep, giant slide, demolition zone, wipe-out, bouncy castle, crazy golf and a toddler zone.

Turner’s Fun Fair brought the ever popular spinning tea-cups and catering van. Organisers, Prudhoe Town Council, who own and manage the park, said there was an all day queue for ice cream.

Meanwhile Island Extreme, an Isle of White-based scooter specialist, organised the scooter competition, with competitions for under 12s and those aged over 13.

Blake Nash of Island Extreme team said: “The atmosphere and support we received has been unforgettable. We all really enjoyed ourselves and would love come up again.”
